Some outdoor shopping centers in Arizona back open, indoor malls expected to reopen Saturday

The rest of Macerich's shopping malls will open back up starting on Saturday after the announcement at Arizona's stay-at-home order would expire on Friday.

PHOENIX — The shopping centers owned by a major real estate company in Arizona have started welcoming back shoppers.

Retailers at Kierland Commons, Biltmore Fashion Park, and SanTan Village in the Valley, as well as La Encantada in Tucson, opened their doors to shoppers last Friday.

This was done following the guidance from Gov. Doug Ducey that allowed barbershops and salons to reopen on May 8 with some restrictions.

The shopping centers are all owned by the real estate company Macerich.

The rest of Macerich's shopping malls will open back up starting on Saturday after Ducey's announcement at the state's stay-at-home order would expire on Friday.

The shopping centers that will be able to reopen starting Saturday include Arrowhead Towne Center, Chandler Fashion Center, Desert Sky Mall, Paradise Valley Mall, Scottsdale Fashion Square and Superstition Springs Center.

Shoppers should not expect all retailers at these shopping centers to be open.

Shoppers can find updated details on hours, which retailers and restaurants are open, plus curbside pickup and takeout service, on the shopping centers’ individual websites.

Officials are taking extra precautions and are focusing special and ongoing attention to clean and sanitize commonly used areas and are encouraging appropriate social distancing between shoppers.

Shoppers with specific questions about any particular stores are encouraged to contact those stores.

Ducey allowed barbershops and salons to reopen their doors on May 8, with enhanced sanitation and reduced capacity.

Restaurants across the state were allowed to start reopening for dine-in service on Monday, but there were several restrictions in place as well.

Ducey announced on Tuesday that the state's stay-at-home order would expire on Friday and that gyms and pools could start operating again.

COVID-19 is believed to be primarily spread through coughs or sneezes.

It may be possible for the virus to spread by touching a surface or object with the virus and then a person touching their mouth, nose or eyes, but this is not thought to be the main method of spread, the CDC says.

You should consult your doctor if you traveled to an area currently affected by COVID-19 and feel sick with fever, cough or difficulty breathing.

There is no vaccine for the coronavirus, so the best way to prevent COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases is to:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
