PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. — Health officials reported the first COVID-19 death in Pima County on Monday.
A woman in her 50s with underlying health conditions died after testing positive for the virus.
It is the third coronavirus death in Arizona.
“We express our deepest condolences to this person’s loved ones and family members,” said Dr. Bob England, Director of the Pima County Health Department. “COVID-19 is a dangerous disease that can be fatal and is especially serious for those with underlying health conditions, no matter their age. There will be more cases of COVID-19 in Pima County, and there will be more deaths. Please take recommended precautions to slow the spread.”
The first person to die of COVID-19 was an employee with the City of Phoenix Aviation Department. He died at home, and health officials said they did not know about his COVID-19 diagnosis until after his death last Tuesday.
