PHOENIX — Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and Superintendent Kathy Hoffman extended school closures across the state by two weeks Friday.
Dozens of districts individually decided to put the school year on hiatus as the coronavirus outbreak was elevated into a pandemic by the World Health Organization earlier this month.
Ducey and Hoffman then made the call to make the closures statewide and was originally slated to be in effect until March 27. Friday's announcement extended the closures until April 10, at which point Ducey and school administrators will decide if classes should resume or another delay is necessary.
Concerns about the virus sparked State of Emergency status in cities across the state, with many areas limiting the number of people allowed at public events, restaurants and bars.
Health officials are worried that hospitals wouldn't be able to handle a sudden influx of patients if a large group, like a classroom, were to be infected all at once.
