This year's flu season is nothing to sneeze at according to Arizona health officials.
The Arizona Department of Health Service reported Friday the number of influenza cases so far in 2019 is more than three times as many as previous seasons.
There have been 950 flu cases so far this season compared to 290 cases during the same time period in 2018. Every county in the state has reported influenza cases.
More than half of the reported cases this season were infants, children and adolescents.
“Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe illness and can lead to hospitalization or even death. With the holidays right around the corner and people attending gatherings with friends and family, getting a flu shot today can help stop the spread of the disease," ADHS Director Dr. Cara Christ said.
Health officials encourage people to get their flu shot if they haven't yet.
“The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones is to get your flu vaccine now if you haven’t already,” said Dr. Christ.
Experts also recommend washing your hands, covering your cough and staying home when you're sick.
