Phoenix photographer Scotty Kirby nationally recognized for drag queen portraits

Kirby began shooting queens five years ago. Today he is known for his snap shot skills thanks, in part, to the contestants on Ru Paul's Drag Race.

PHOENIX – “It’s become 90 percent of my business,” said nationally known drag photographer Scotty Kirby.

Kirby began shooting queens five years ago. Today he is known for his snapshot skills thanks, in part, to the contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“I remember when I first starting shooting girls from Drag Race,” he said. “It was insane. It was obviously a way to get your name out there because they have such a big following.”

His photos have also been featured on the VH1 show.

“It’s pretty cool and kind of surreal to see your work in front of that big audience and also a little scary to see what the general public has to say when they have so many followers commenting,” he said.”

Kirby tries to incorporate art, beauty and drama in every frame.

“Immediately after we shoot,” he said, “me and the queen will go to a coffee shop and just plug away, just start working on what we created, so it’s kind of more of a collaborative effort.”
