'Topanga would be the friend to tell you to do it': Danielle Fishel shares her breast cancer diagnosis, encourages fans to get checked

"Topanga" from the 90's TV show "Boy Meets World" chats with 12News Journalist Krystle Long about how a different kind of screen changed her life.

PHOENIX — During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Danielle Fishel, the actress who famously played Topanga from "Boy Meets World," wants to make a 'world' of difference by sharing her recent breast cancer story.

A routine mammogram this summer helped Fishel catch her breast cancer at a very early stage. She said she acted quickly, has done treatments and now she said she is doing well.

Fishel wants to continue to be a role model for those who grew up watching her in the 1990s, so she's getting the word out about the importance of preventative exams and early detection.

In the 2024 Aflac Wellness Matters Survey, Fishel found some important results.

The survey found that 84% of millennials admit to delaying health and wellness screenings beyond the recommended time frame. The survey also found that among those diagnosed with cancer, 56% found out at a regularly scheduled screening or routine exam.

"I am living proof that having those annual exams can be the difference between life or death. So if you grew up watching me on your TV screen, it might be time for you to book a mammogram or colonoscopy and 'Topanga' would be the friend to tell you to do it," Fishel said. "I'm happy to stand in her place and tell you myself to please make those appointments."
