Valley teacher awarded Fiesta Bowl grant for second year

For the past two years, Lacey Chavez has received a grant awarded to teachers.

PHOENIX — It's no secret many teachers reach into their own pockets to provide students with the resources they need to succeed.

That's why the Wishes for Teachers program through Fiesta Bowl Charities gives back to 500 of them each year.

Funds from the Fiesta Bowl games go right back into our community.

Lacey Chavez is one of the teachers to be awarded a grant for the past two years.

"I couldn't believe it I was so excited," Chavez said.

Deciding how to use the grant was challenging for Chavez.

"The hardest part was deciding what I wanted to wish for, for the students and the year before I was able to get them an Apple TV with the $2,500 grant," said Chavez. "Plus, I wanted to get craft supplies for our second annual culture craft day."

Chavez said the grant was put to great use.

"The kids were so excited to know that, that money was given to them, and they can use the materials as we do in the classroom," ssaid Chavez. "We get all of 450 students together and mix them up with teachers and they get to do a craft."

Sandra Avila with Fiesta Bowl Charities says education is at the heart of what they do and they love awarding 500 teachers every year to help make their wishes come true. You still have time to submit an application for this year and then draft day will be in November.

Applications are open until Sept. 30 at 10 p.m. You can click here for more information.
