MESA, Ariz. — Our 12News A+ Teacher series continues with a sweet surprise for an East Valley high school teacher.
After receiving an email from her husband telling us how incredible she is, we just couldn’t miss the chance to highlight the amazing work she’s doing at Canyon Valley School in Mesa. It’s the alternative school within Gilbert Public Schools.
“We’re here at Canyon Valley High School, where my wife Amber Bauer teaches,” said Nick Bauer, Amber Bauer's husband. “She teaches social studies and student council right now.”
Nick Bauer told us he nominated her because she’s very hardworking.
“It’s been incredible watching her grow here and truly reach her max potential,” Nick Bauer said.
Nick Bauer said her work is centered around the well-being of her students.
“She’s working on a campus improvement committee on the campus,” said Nick Bauer. “…not only is that encompassing other teachers and school officials, but she’s working with students to see what they would like to see, to have campus improved.”
The project is all part of an effort to make students feel more welcome when they walk onto campus.
“I knew from the moment that I started the interview with her, that she was going to be a rockstar teacher,” said Principal Chad Fitzgerald. “I could see in her, not only the knowledge base of being a teacher, but also the caring heart… being the alternative school for Gilbert Public Schools, you really have to have that heart portion.”
As our 12News cameras were rolling, we followed Nick Bauer and school staff members into her class to surprise her and she was completely shocked.
Smiling from ear to ear, Amber Bauer listened in as her husband told her class why he nominated her to be recognized.
“She’s been a rockstar,” he said. “She works on the campus improvement committee, and she’s working to make this place a better place… to bring local businesses in and help improve the campus.”
“He never keeps secrets,” Amber Bauer said. “…so, I am very impressed.”
Before we wrapped up our visit, on behalf of 12News and American Furniture Warehouse, we presented a $500 check to Amber.
“Thank you,” she said, as her students gave her a round of applause. “I’m still impressed he kept a secret.”
She says being in a supportive environment is what makes or breaks it.
“I’m like a proud mom when they do great things,” Amber Bauer said. “I cry… I’ve cried with all of them. I laughed with all of them… it’s awesome.”
