12 News A+ Teacher: Kayla Burden at Bogle Junior High

“You’re just such a kind and caring teacher, and always know how to help with problems or drama that’s going on,” said Hudson.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — We’re sharing how an extraordinary bond between a junior high student and her 7th grade teacher, led to a 12 News A+ teacher nomination. It also earned a special visit from one of her former students, and administrators at Bogle Junior High School in Chandler.

12 News journalist Trisha Hendricks helped share the news.

“I’m in 8th grade at Bogle Junior High and I nominated Kayla Burden,” said Christina Hudson, who contacted 12 News with a 12 News A+ teacher nomination for her 7th grade ELA teacher from last year.

“She knows how to connect with students and help them,” she said. “If you have issues… you don’t know what to do, she can relate, because I do cheer and she was a cheerleader, so she helped me make some really tough decisions.”

Bogle Junior High Principal Amanda Cook shared what it takes to be successful like Mrs. Burden.

“Kayla is awesome,” she said. “She’s been here for at least six years, kids love to be in her class, she’s great at establishing relationships, she gets to know her students… she’s definitely an A+ teacher.”

After a quick knock on her classroom door, Hudson and school staff members made their way inside, holding flowers, balloons, and a special certificate.

“Good morning!” said Hendricks. “We’re looking for Kayla Burden.”

“That’s me!” Burden said.

“We have a very special announcement… your teacher Mrs. Burden has been selected as a 12 News A+ Teacher,” replied Hendricks.

The classroom erupted with applause and cheers.

“You’re just such a kind and caring teacher, and always know how to help with problems or drama that’s going on,” said Hudson.

“Thank you! I appreciate that,” said Burden, completely caught off guard. “Thank you!”

“You gave her advice that really helped her along, so thank you for making a difference,” said Hendricks.

Burden said she credits her desire to go into education to several people.

“I had awesome teachers when I was in elementary school… my mom’s a teacher, so it also kind of runs in the family,” said Burden.

Her advice to teachers who are just beginning their careers is to show their students they truly care.

“Care about them as people,” she said. “Everything else will come with it.”

And before we headed out, we had one more surprise for her.

“On behalf of American Furniture Warehouse, and 12 News, we’d like to present you with this check for $500,” said Kevin Chapin, assistant principal.

“Hopefully this encourages you to keep doing what you’re doing and encouraging other educators along the way too,” said Hendricks.

“Thank you,” said Burden, “I appreciate you guys coming in."
