16-year-old shot, killed after trying to rob 2 people at Phoenix apartment complex, police say

Two other possible victims drove themselves to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

PHOENIX — A 16-year-old girl was shot and killed after trying to rob a couple in Phoenix, police said.

Officers were called to an area near 7th Avenue and Alta Vista Road around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of gunshots. 16-year-old Yadira Duarte Rodriguez was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Two other gunshot wound victims drove themselves to a nearby emergency room where officers met them. They gave officers information that connected them to the shooting, police said.

A preliminary investigation shows the man and woman went to meet Rodriguez at an apartment complex. Rodriguez got into the back seat, pulled out a gun and attempted to rob the two, police said.

The woman fought with Rodriguez for the gun and both the man and woman were shot during the struggle, police said. The man gained access to the gun and shot Rodriguez, police said. They pulled Rodriguez from the car and drove away, officials said.

Bothe the man and woman were released after detectives consulted with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. A decision on whether anyone will be charged will come after an investigation.
