MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — A Valley woman was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after her baby ingested fentanyl pills in her possession and died of an overdose in 2022.

Police said in September 2022, Scottsdale officers were called to a home regarding a 13-month-old child who was not breathing.

According to the police report, when officers arrived, they found the baby "cold and unresponsive." Police said the baby's mother, Gabrielle Marshall, told officers the child had gotten into her medication.

Police said emergency crews administered Narcan and transported the child to the hospital, where they later died from their injuries.

In April of this year, Marshall pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse. Marshall will serve 11 1/2 years in prison and then serve 10 years probation.

“Losing a child is an immeasurable agony; but knowing that because of your addiction your child is gone is something this mother will have to live with for the rest of her life,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a news release.
