MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — An investigation is underway after parts of a human skeleton were found in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
MCSO said a man reported finding the bones around 8:50 Sunday morning just west of milepost 216 on State Route 87. That's just a couple of miles south of the Bushnell Tanks trailhead in the Tonto National Forest.
Detectives from MCSO are currently investigating the skeletal remains and how they ended up in that location.
The Tonto National Forest spans more than 2.9 million acres and is the ninth-largest national forest in the U.S. Three million people visit the park every year, according to the forest's website. It was established in 1905.
This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
