Tempe police shoot man accused of ramming into officer's car during street racing operation

Officers said they were carrying out part of "operation street sweep" when the incident happened.

TEMPE, Ariz. — A man is in the hospital after two Tempe police officers shot him when he allegedly rammed his car into a police vehicle.

The incident happened around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday near Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway while police were conducting "operation street sweep," a police initiative targeting street racing.

Officers reportedly saw the man driving at a high rate of speed, and when officers tried to stop the man he backed into one of the officers' cars.

Two of the three officers present at the time shot at the man, striking him while he drove away. Officers later found and detained him, and he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No one else was in the car at the time. It is unknown if the man was armed. Officials have not released his identity at this time but described him as roughly 30 years old.

Tempe police say this is the first time one of their officers have been involved in a shooting this year.
