Man shot by police at Tempe mobile home park, stepfather found dead

Details are limited at this time, but police say there is no threat to the community.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Tempe police were involved in a shooting at the Meadows Mobile Home Park near 48th Street and Southern Avenue early Friday morning, officials confirmed.

Around 7 a.m., a woman at the mobile home park reportedly called Tempe police and told them that she believed her 55-year-old son killed his stepfather, her husband.

She told police that she last saw her husband unresponsive on the floor before getting out of the home. Another 911 call came in from a different resident, claiming they heard loud pops.

When officers arrived on the scene they surrounded the home and ordered the son out. Helicopter footage of the incident showed police approaching with protective equipment.

The son came out of the home where he allegedly pointed the gun at himself and then at officers. When he did so, one officer shot him, police officials said.

When it was safe to do so, officers provided first aid to the man. He was then taken to a hospital. He is out of surgery and receiving further treatment.

Officers entered the home and found the woman's husband dead inside. Due to the ongoing investigation, police were unable to confirm further details about the homicide.

The deceased stepfather has been identified as 77-year-old Roland B. Jahnke.

The son has been identified as 55-year-old Robert Purdie, who has yet to be officially charged since he is still receiving medical treatment.

Tempe police will handle the homicide investigation while The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the officer-involved shooting.

Police said that there was no other history at the address, and the woman said that she knew of no arguments or conflicts between her husband and her son.

The officer involved in the shooting has more than 16 years with Tempe PD and is currently assigned to the patrol bureau.
