QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. — On the same road where Preston Lord was assaulted, a vigil was held by the community.
Hundreds gathered in the neighborhood near Chandler Heights and Sossaman Road on Thursday evening.
The atmosphere was different than other walks and vigils held for the 16-year-old. That's because many said this one came with a sense of relief. Relief that Lord's family is getting closer to justice.
A total of seven people have been arrested in connection to the Teen's death that happened back in October.
Lord's stepmother, Melissa Ciconte, addressed the large crowd and the arrests.
“We are pleased that after four months there is positive movement in Preston’s case," Ciconte said. “These arrests are only the first steps in getting justice.”
Those in attendance and many others have also been waiting for arrests to be made. Scott Myers said he was relieved to know the suspects who are made up of teens and young adults have been charged with first-degree murder.
"We got what we wanted," Myers said
The suspects are teens and young adults and all are facing first-degree murder charges. Those attending the vigil like Ann Doucette hope those responsible receive the maximum sentence.
"We continue to pray for accountability and that they don't slip through the system," Doucette said.
Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg and Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice were also in attendance with other city leaders.
“We have more to do and we are seeking additional arrests but as far as past that, I can’t really talk about that piece,” Brice said.
At the end of her speech, Ciconte thanks the police departments for their work and the community's support. Once again she called on those who have information on Preston's murder to come forward.
