Gilbert bans kids from possessing brass knuckles

The town's actions come after a series of violent incidents reported throughout the East Valley involving teens.

GILBERT, Ariz. — The Gilbert Town Council voted Tuesday to prohibit juveniles from possessing brass knuckles.

The passage of the ordinance is the latest development as cities in the East Valley continue to respond to a series of violent encounters involving teens. The issue gained more attention following the death of 16-year-old Preston Lord last fall.

Gilbert's new ban applies to knuckles made of metal, plastic, wood, bone or any other type of hard material. The town ordinance also prohibits someone from attempting to sell or lend brass knuckles to a minor.

Those who violate the ordinance may be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Brass knuckles have reportedly been used in some of the recent incidents of teen violence throughout the Valley.

Court documents show brass knuckles were allegedly used in December 2022 by a suspect accused of ambushing a birthday party in Gilbert to assault a juvenile.

Last year, a teenager's teeth were knocked out after he was hit by someone wearing brass knuckles outside of an In-N-Out in Phoenix.

Gilbert's council additionally passed an ordinance that attempts to hold accountable individuals who host "unruly gatherings." People who host gatherings considered to be disruptive or a nuisance could receive a civil violation and a fine of at least $500.

The responsible party would also be liable for the costs incurred by Gilbert in responding to the gathering.

"The objective of this ordinance is to address the impact of teen violence on the community and enhance the safety of individuals attending gatherings within the Town," town records state.
