DPS: Hours-long standoff with SWAT team near Show Low ends with suspect shot

SHOW LOW, Ariz. — A suspect was shot in an hours-long standoff with law enforcement that started Sunday evening and continued overnight into Monday, officials said.

According to early reports, the suspect was barricaded in place near US 60 and Apache County Road and was shooting at White Mountain police and Apache County Sheriff's Office deputies.

Around 8:50 p.m., officials called in a SWAT team from the Department of Public Safety, starting a long negotiation process.

The suspect started shooting at the SWAT team around 2:40 a.m., and the team returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was then taken into custody and brought to a Phoenix-area hospital for treatment. No law enforcement officers were hurt during the incident.

DPS will be handling the investigation. Officials didn't release details on the suspect's identity or what led up to the situation.
