SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A suspect has been shot and killed in Scottsdale after shooting at police from a stolen vehicle, according to authorities.
The Scottsdale Police Department said the shooting happened at around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Scottsdale and Cactus roads when officers tried to stop the vehicle.
Officers were following the vehicle, which had been reported stolen from Phoenix, police said.
Police said multiple rounds were fired by the suspect.
“So they set up for that traffic stop. They turn on their overhead lights, that car comes to a stop. They come to a stop. Driver is out immediately, immediately and firing from a handgun," said Police Chief Jeff Walther. "They then put themselves in the right position to return fire and ultimately the suspect is deceased inside the vehicle."
Several vehicles being driven by people not involved in the incident were also at the intersection when the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Laquanza Young, allegedly started shooting at officers.
No officers were injured, police said.
Walther said he’s thankful his officers will go home tonight but also said a bigger conversation is needed about violence in the country.
"When did this become ok? If you think about in terms of over the last 14 months for Scottsdale police," said Walther. "I’ve had four different officer-involved shootings, each where the suspect shot at us.”
