PHOENIX — Editor's note: The above video is from an earlier newscast.

A 27-year-old man is dead after police shot him after he allegedly fired a gun inside of a Phoenix apartment Tuesday night and threatened a woman.

The Phoenix Police Department said the man, who was identified Wednesday as Donald Ward, was shooting his gun at an apartment near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road around 9 p.m.

Officers responded to the call of a fight inside the complex, including one from a woman inside the apartment.

Police said she left the line open and the 911 operator could overhear her pleading for help and asking not to be shot. Gunshots were also heard in the background, police said.

Several officers arrived and forced their way into the apartment after they heard gunshots and a woman pleading for help, police said.

The officers found that the man was holding the woman in a bathroom. As they approached the bathroom, the man fired his gun again, police said.

They then entered the bathroom and confronted the man, who was still armed with a gun, police said.

Three officers fired and hit the man, who was pronounced dead on scene.

The woman had minor injuries. No officers were injured.

The officers were identified as a 46-year-old man with 20 years on the department, a 34-year-old man with four years on the department and a 23-year-old man with two years on the department.
