Suspect dies after police involved in shooting in Phoenix

This is the 16th shooting involving Phoenix police officers this year and the second in the last 12 hours.

PHOENIX — Phoenix police were involved in a shooting near 3rd Street and Clarendon Avenue Tuesday morning. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said during a news conference in the afternoon that the police responded to a call for service on Clarendon Street around 11:20 a.m. A woman told police she was outside feeding her livestock when she observed a man trying to jump her fence.

Police gave commands to the man to stop, but he did not comply. The man allegedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and then two police officers fired their weapons in response. The man was given aid at the scene but later died.

"It's always tragic when these incidents happen for everybody involved," Phoenix Police Public Information Sergeant Mayra Reeson said during the news conference.

Reeson said this is the second shooting involving an officer in approximately 12 hours and the 16th shooting involving officers this year.

Police said no one else was injured in the situation.
