According to police, the suspect killed himself at a CVS pharmacy after allegedly killing a man in a U-haul and leading officers on a chase down Thunderbird Road.

PHOENIX — EDITOR'S NOTE: The video above is from a previous broadcast.

Police have provided an update on a deadly shooting involving Phoenix officers earlier this month. According to police, the suspect killed himself at a CVS pharmacy after allegedly killing a man in a U-haul and leading officers on a chase down Thunderbird Road.

The incident, which happened on Oct. 13, began in the area of 49th Avenue and Thunderbird Road and after a pursuit by officers ended at 99th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

Officers responded to the first location, 49th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, after a 911 call reporting a shooting.

That caller told the 911 operator that a man had been shot in the passenger cab of a U-Haul truck and the suspect was still in the area in a gray Nissan car.

According to the caller, the shooter, later identified as 28-year-old Alberto Espinoza, was at the U-Haul walking toward the Nissan just as officers arrived on the scene.

The caller told the 911 operator two people in the area said the shooting had happened earlier but the man had returned to the scene.

The suspect was wearing dark-colored clothes.

The arriving officers saw the suspect walk away from the U-Haul and get in the Nissan.

Officers followed the car and attempted to get it to stop. They turned on their lights and sirens in a further attempt to get the car to stop but it continued to drive, police said.

After the driver ran several stop signs officers “declared a pursuit" of the car, police said.

During the pursuit the vehicle reached 90 miles per hour and went through red lights, police said.

A few minutes later the Phoenix PD aerial unit arrived and took over following the car allowing the patrol units to back off their pursuit of the car.

Police said the car finally stopped in the area of 99th Avenue and Thunderbird Road in the parking lot of a CVS Pharmacy.

According to police, the suspect parked the car in the pharmacy’s drive-thru and began to walk away.

Officers pulled their patrol units behind the suspect and told him to stop.

Police said the suspect pulled out a gun and turned around to face the officers. At that point, one of the officers fired a shot at the suspect while at the same time, the suspect pointed the gun under his chin and shot himself.

After the shooting, officers attempted to save the suspect while waiting for paramedics with the Peoria Fire Department to arrive.

The firefighters took over life-saving measures and rushed the suspect to the hospital where he later died, police said.

A report from the medical examiner found that the suspect died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and had not been hit by gunfire from officers.

Additional officers also responded to the earlier shooting at the U-Haul. A man, later identified as 45-year-old Johnny Grammatico, was found dead from a gunshot wound.

The gun used by the suspect to kill himself was forensically linked to the weapon used to kill Grammatico, police said.

The officer involved in the shooting incident is a seven-year veteran of the Phoenix police and assigned to the Cactus Park precinct, according to police.

The shooting incident is under review by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. It is also under administrative review by Phoenix police.
