PHOENIX — An assault suspect is in the hospital after being shot by a Phoenix police sergeant on Monday.
Police said around 11:15 a.m., officers were called to an assault call near 27th Avenue and Bell Road.
The police sergeant who responded to the call located a man fitting the description of the assault suspect traveling westbound on 31st Avenue.
Police said the sergeant gave the suspect verbal commands to stop and the suspect refused and ran into an apartment complex near 33rd Avenue and Bell Road.
The sergeant briefly lost sight of the suspect but eventually located him in the complex. Police said the sergeant once again told the suspect to stand down and the suspect refused. The suspect took off running and after a brief pursuit, the sergeant was able to command him to stop.
The suspect, who police said had a knife, refused commands. The suspect charged at the sergeant, who deployed his weapon and shot the man.
Authorities said the suspect was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
