PHOENIX — A double shooting in south Phoenix left one man dead and ended with a car crashing into a nearby home early Friday morning.

According to early reports, officers were called to a scene near 51st and Southern avenues for reports of a shooting. There they found a man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. First responders took him to a nearby hospital.

Soon after, a related call told police that a vehicle crashed into a home just north of the original shooting scene.

At the second location, police found a man shot inside the vehicle. The man, later identified as 47-year-old James Baines II, was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police said preliminary information regarding the shooting suggests the man with non-life-threatening injuries and Baines were involved in a "shootout" near 51st and Southern avenues. Baines fled the area before he died, police said.

The man involved in the shootout — who police have not identified — provided a self-defense claim, police said. He was released from custody after being interviewed.

Once the case is completed, it will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for a "charging decision," police said. Police did not release any further information.
