GLENDALE, Ariz. — A hit-and-run suspect is dead following a shooting involving Glendale police on Thursday evening, authorities said.
Police said the incident started around 5 p.m. when officers were called to 53rd and Maryland avenues for reports of a two-vehicle collision involving a pickup truck and an SUV.
Police said a firefighter responding to the collision witnessed the pickup truck driver jump out of the vehicle and run from the scene.
A Glendale police officer in the area began searching for the suspect. While searching a nearby alleyway, police said the officer heard gunfire from a nearby bush. Authorities said the suspect, who was hiding inside the bush, fired several rounds, and the officer returned fire, killing the suspect.
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Anthony Jay Rios.
Authorities said the officer involved, an 8-year veteran of the police force, was not injured.
