PHOENIX — Two people are dead – one from a self-inflicted gunshot wound – after officers located a suspect on the grounds of a hotel in central Phoenix on Wednesday and a person with the suspect pointed a gun at officers.
The Phoenix Police Department responded to a call for shots fired near 24th Street and Thomas Road, just east of Piestewa Freeway. The shooting involved a trooper from the Department of Public Safety and an officer from the Maricopa County Adult Probation, the department said.
When the trooper located the suspect, 28-year-old Jacob Hernandez, wanted for a felony, he shot himself, Phoenix police said during a news conference Wednesday evening. Kenzie Keyes, 30-year-old, was with Hernandez, bent over, picked up the gun and pointed it at the trooper and officer, Phoenix police said.
The trooper and officer then fired their weapons, Phoenix police said. Both died on the scene, the department said.
No other injuries were reported and one handgun was found at the scene.
Phoenix police said there were no body-worn cameras on the law enforcement officials when the shooting happened.
No Phoenix police officers were involved in the shooting. However, the department is leading the investigation.
