PEORIA, Ariz. — A 2-year-old girl who police said was kidnapped by her father, who does not have parental rights, was found safe and unharmed Sunday afternoon, police said. Her father is in custody.
Peoria police said they were called to a home near Lake Pleasant Parkway and Speckled Gecko Drive around 2:45 p.m. on Saturday due to family problems.
When officers got to the home, they learned that 52-year-old Kevin Carr had come to the home for a supervised visit with his 2-year-old daughter.
Carr had a physical dispute with his brother and their mother, the supervisor of the visit, called police to the home. No arrests were made at that time.
After police left the scene, Carr reportedly took the girl's car seat out of his mother's vehicle. When he left, he took the girl with him, police said.
Carr's mother realized the girl was missing "within minutes" and called police back to the scene.
Over the next few hours, Carr fled Arizona into New Mexico and was seen driving east towards Texas, police said.
Local police in New Mexico arrested Carr and found the girl unharmed. The child was then reunited with her mother.
Carr is in custody in New Mexico as Arizona law enforcement works to extradite him back to the state.
Carr has a previous arrest record for alleged aggravated DUI and possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Carr's 2-year-old daughter was with him at the time of that arrest.
Phoenix and Chino Valley police as well as the Gila County Sheriff's Office and the Phoenix FBI Office helped with the search for Carr.
This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
