1 dead after shots fired at Albertsons store in Scottsdale

Police said due to the amount of 911 calls about gunshots inside the Albertsons from shoppers who were hiding, officers responded as if this was an active shooter.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — One man is dead and another is in critical condition after being shot inside an Albertsons store in Scottsdale, according to Scottsdale police.

The Scottsdale Police Department said the shooting was an isolated incident between three men at the store near Scottsdale and Thomas roads, which resulted in gunshots inside the Albertsons and two men getting hit with gunfire. No bystanders were injured.

Officials said due to the amount of 911 calls about gunshots inside the Albertsons from shoppers who were hiding, officers responded as if this was an active shooter incident.

"We responded as if this could've been an active shooter but we have no indication that that was the case," Bolin said.

A third man believed to be part of the altercation is being interviewed by Scottsdale police, Bolin said.

There are no outstanding suspects related to this incident. Police have identified the deceased man as 35-year-old Robert Carlos Padilla from Phoenix.

Craig Jobs said he was in the self-checkout lanes when he overheard an argument between the men.

“I saw a couple guys arguing and one said kind of challenging the other, the other got in the other’s face and then you just started hearing gunshots," Jobs said.

Jobs and other shoppers immediately dropped to the ground.

“There was me and four other girls in self-checkout. We had to go into the corner. One of them called the police. I put whatever carts I had in front of me," Jobs said.

Others didn't hear the argument that led up to the shooting.

"It's about the worst day of my life," a man inside the store at the time of the shooting said.

A father, who asked not to be named, said he was shopping for DoorDash with his three children when he heard several gunshots.

“I got to get my kids out of here. That’s all I cared about," the man said.

Police interviewed dozens of witnesses before they left the store and parking lot Tuesday night.
