SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Scottsdale police believe they have determined what happened to the woman who has been wanted for decades in a drunk driving case that killed a 21-year-old college student.
The whereabouts of Gloria Schulze have not been known to police since the suspect fled Arizona before she could be prosecuted for a manslaughter charge dating back to 1994.
Schulze was accused of hitting a vehicle driven by Angela Maher, who was on her way to pick up a friend in Old Town Scottsdale. Police said Schulze had been drinking and smoking marijuana on the night of the crash.
Maher had been an advocate against drunk driving and founded a chapter of Students Against Drunk Driving at Xavier College Preparatory High School.
After Schulze left the state and cut off contact with family, the case was featured on an episode of "Unsolved Mysteries."
In 2001, the suspect was tried in absentia and found guilty of manslaughter and endangerment. Scottsdale police would spend the next two decades attempting to find Schulze so she could be sentenced for the offenses.
A family member of Schulze's told investigators they got an anonymous phone call informing them that Schulze had recently died in Canada.
Police later learned Schulze appeared to have been living in Canada under the name of Kate Dooley. Law enforcement officials in Canada found a DUI arrest made in 2009 for Dooley that included a copy of the woman's fingerprints.
Police confirmed last month that Dooley's fingerprints matched with Schulze's.
Schulze died of cancer in December 2019. Scottsdale's unsolved case is now officially closed.
