PRESCOTT, Ariz. — A man is dead after he was shot by a Prescott police officer during an "altercation" over the weekend, officials with the Prescott Police Department said.

According to early reports, officers were called to a home near Rosser Street and Willow Creek Road around 7 p.m. on Saturday to find a suspect from a previous investigation.

Officers found the man outside and "an altercation ensued which resulted in the officer utilizing lethal force," the department said. Police did not specify the nature of the altercation or whether or not the man in question had a weapon.

First responders treated the man on the scene and he was flown to a Phoenix-area hospital where he later died. Officials have not released his identity at this time.

As part of the department's standard practice, the investigation will be handled by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Police did not disclose details about the officer involved or which investigation the man was previously involved in.
