GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Detectives with the Goodyear Police Department are turning to the city prosecutor's office after the Maricopa County Attorney's Officer declined to charge a man earlier this year for his role in a crash that injured a group of bicyclists, killing two of them.
Detectives submitted two counts of causing death of another by a moving violation and six counts of causing serious physical injury to another by a moving violation – both are misdemeanors.
On Feb. 25, police say a pickup truck plowed into the large group riding over the bridge on Cotton Lane. The driver allegedly struck the barrier wall on the side of the bridge and traveled for roughly 520 feet before finally coming to a stop. The driver, Pedro Quintana-Lujan, told investigators his steering wheel had locked.
Police had initially attempted to submit charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault against Quintana-Lujan, but the county attorney wouldn't pursue the case, saying there was insufficient evidence to convict Quintana-Lujan for any felony charges connected to the February crash.
Instead, he'll face misdemeanor charges through the city's prosecutor.
