SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Two people have now died after a shooting at Cholla Park in Scottsdale Tuesday and police say it was a murder-suicide.
A woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a man was pronounced dead later at the hospital.
The shooting took place at the park located near Via Linda. Officers closed lanes on Via Linda Drive at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard as they investigated the scene of a shooting.
"The investigation has revealed that the two were known to each other and all indications are that this was a murder-suicide, with the male shooting the female and then turning the gun on himself," Scottsdale Police Department said in a release.
Police identified the victim as Tammy Welch, 50, on Wednesday, and police say 59-year-old Lawrence Labine was the shooter.
Weltch and Labine are divorced. Police say Labine was armed with two handguns and shot Weltch with one and shot himself with the other.
We spoke to a witness, Clayton Boyce who says he heard gunshots and ran toward the commotion, trying to help before first responders arrived.
"I was just enjoying my day at the park and then some gunshots went off and I went around and there was some bodies," he told 12 News.
Boyce couldn't believe what he saw, even went in for questioning with police after witnessing part of what happened.
"A lot, I was just trying to comprehend what I'd seen and make sure everybody was okay," he added.
Cholla Park quickly became a crime scene.
"I was yelling at someone to call, I was screaming someone call 911, someone call 911," Boyce added.
Meanwhile, those who live in the area were curious about all the police cars, even a command vehicle, in what's usually a quiet neighborhood.
"I'm here every day int he park playing ball with my dog but now it's a little bits scary," Slawek Dembowy said.
"Very nice, people here are great, you never think something like this would happen around here," Boyce said.
