PHOENIX — An armed robbery led to Phoenix Police officers chasing a suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Guy Vogel Jr., on foot before shooting and killing him Saturday afternoon, according to the department.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower said the department got a call about an armed robbery at a pawn shop near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road just after 4:00 Saturday afternoon.
A man, Vogel, and a woman, later identified as 25-year-old Felicia Evans, reportedly took several handguns from the store before running out and heading west on Indian School Road.
Officers soon arrived on the scene and found the suspects. Officers gave them commands to put their guns down and put their hands up.
Vogel did not comply and officers used a 40mm foam bullet to try and subdue him, which did not work.
Vogel then ran off and officers chased him on foot. He was then seen trying to get into a truck, which had a driver inside, and officers re-engaged him. Vogel then pointed a gun at officers, which is when officers opened fire.
Vogel was hit and taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. Evans was taken into custody and booked in Maricopa County Sheriff's Office jail. She was not hurt. No one from the community was hurt.
Evans allegedly told police that she had taken three firearms from the pawn shop on Vogel's instructions. She has "at least three felony convictions" in Arizona with the last one being from 2019, according to court documents.
It is not known if the gun Vogel pointed at officers was one of the guns stolen from the pawn shop. It is also not yet known exactly how many guns were stolen. Weapons were found at the scene.
Detectives are working to determine the relationship between Vogel and Evans. They are also working to determine how many officers shot at the man. A full report from the department is expected within two weeks.
The driver of the truck was not involved in the robbery, they were just an innocent bystander who was stuck in traffic, officials said.
This is a developing story. More details will be added as they are made available.
