New details released in arrests of robbery suspects accused of shooting off-duty Phoenix officer

The officer was shot multiple times while attempting to stop an armed robbery near 35th and Southern avenues, police said.

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer who was shot on March 29 was released from the hospital Monday, with police announcing three suspects had been taken into custody in connection to the shooting.

Phoenix police released more details Thursday on what led up to their arrests.

Officer Harold Boswell was shot multiple times while attempting to stop an armed robbery near 35th and Southern avenues, police said.

A civilian in the area told Boswell that the robbery was happening, prompting him to step in. He was attacked "immediately" when he approached and the suspects shot him before he could get close to the scene, Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan said.

"I'm happy that no one else was hurt. It could have been even more tragic as it was a very crowded area that evening," Sullivan added.

Detectives initially had little information to go off of and scoured video surveillance, witness interviews and other digital evidence to track down the suspects.

The three people arrested were two 17-year-olds and a 19-year-old who had a prior felony conviction. One of the suspects fled Arizona and traveled to Las Vegas where he was later arrested.

All three arrests were made separately within 72 hours of the shooting. Sullivan thanked members of the public and other law enforcement organizations that stepped up to help.

As Boswell left the hospital earlier this week, dozens of officers were waiting to greet him as he was taken to a waiting vehicle outside of Banner University Medical Center.

Boswell's wife and young son were with him as he left the hospital.

Police said he will continue his recovery at home.

"He's in good spirits, he's doing well," Chief Sullivan said. "I believe he'll make a full recovery."

Monday evening, just hours after Boswell went home, police announced they arrested the three individuals in connection with the ambush-style shooting.

Their names have not been released and the investigation remains very active, according to police.
