PHOENIX — A manhunt ended with the arrest of the suspect in a deadly shooting, Phoenix police said Thursday.

When police arrested Refugio Jimenez, 49, he was wearing body armor and discarded a handgun. He also had methamphetamine in his possession, police said.

The shooting happened at a home near 7th and Southern avenues on Monday.

Phoenix police were called to the home shortly before 1 a.m. for reports of gunshots in the area. 12News crews at the scene saw police in a standoff with someone inside the home.

Police served a search warrant and breached the home around 6:20 a.m. Two people were seen being taken into custody, but police have not released more information about who they are.

Two gunshot victims, Rashaad Johnson, 29, and a woman, were found at the scene. First responders pronounced the Johnson dead and the woman was taken to the hospital where she is in stable condition, police said.

Officers took Jimenez to Phoenix Police Headquarters for questioning where he claimed the shooting was in self-defense. Officers say the evidence does not support a self-defense claim so he was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail.

Jimenz faces nine felony charges including first-degree murder and burglary among others, police said.
