Phoenix PD: Suspect dead after being shot by officer responding to burglary call

Phoenix police said two responding officers were injured during the altercation and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

PHOENIX — A suspect is dead after being shot by a police officer Saturday afternoon when officers were responding to a burglary call, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police said the shooting happened at a storage facility near 30th and Washington streets.

Police said both responding officers were injured during the altercation and were taken to the hospital for treatment, according to police.

"One officer fired his service weapon and received minor injuries from the incident," police said. "The second officer did not fire and sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the incident."

Officers arrived at the storage facility around 3:35 p.m. after reports that storage units were being broken into, and found two individuals, an adult male, and an adult female.

Police said the woman, later identified as Sonya Gonzalez, had identification but the man did not. The officers decided to detain the man.

While the officers were attempting to take the man into custody, a struggle ensued with the suspect trying to grab a stun gun from one of the officers, it was at this time the individual was shot, according to police.

Police said one of the officers fired a weapon during the altercation.

The suspect, later identified as Raul Mendez, 35, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he died.

Gonzalez was arrested and booked for an outstanding warrant.

Police said all westbound traffic along Washington Street near the incident will be closed off as the shooting is investigated.

This is a developing story; additional details will be added as they become available.
