PHOENIX — It was early Sunday morning when David Jones and Melissa Flinn woke up to find that they weren't alone in their home. Someone had broken in, and decided to fall asleep curled up next to their treadmill.
Jones, armed with a handgun, nudged the man awake to try and figure out what was going on. Aside from some broken dishes in their kitchen, the couple had no idea how the man got there.
That man fell back asleep in the moments before Phoenix police arrived. He was likely worn out from an early-morning crime spree across the city that officials believe he was behind.
The Phoenix Police Department identified the suspect as 29-year-old Dacio Rodriguez Luna.
Police said the crime spree started around 5:15 Sunday morning, near 2nd and Clarendon avenues. Police received reports about a man trying to break into several vehicles at an apartment complex in the area. They did not find the suspect, who had run from the area before police arrived.
Then, at 6:30 a.m. in the area of 3rd Avenue and Osborn Road, a suspect stole a vehicle after forcing the owner out of it. The stolen vehicle was located a short time after that but was unoccupied, police said.
Minutes later at 6:35 a.m., another victim reported to police that a suspect unsuccessfully attempted to steal their vehicle near 7th Avenue and Osborn Road. The suspect ran away before officers arrived at the scene, police said.
Over an hour later, at 7:50 a.m., officers responded to the area of 9th Avenue and Campus Drive where a suspect had broken into a vehicle. He ran away without stealing anything, police said.
Then, just more than an hour and a half after that at 9:30 a.m., police were called to a home near 10th Avenue and Flower Street after the homeowner found the suspect asleep in his home. The homeowner armed himself for safety and waited for police to arrive. Responding officers woke up the suspect and arrested him, police said.
According to police, Rodriguez Luna is responsible for all of the occurrences. He is facing multiple charges in connection to the incidents.
