1 person may have been target in shooting at Phoenix coffee shop

Phoenix Police are still investigating the motive for the shooting that injured four Friday night near 36th Street and McDowell

PHOENIX — Multiple people were seriously injured in a shooting at central Phoenix strip mall Friday night.

Officers with the Phoenix Police Department were called to the area of 36th Street and McDowell Road just after 9 p.m. on Friday regarding a shooting at a local business. Police found three people with gunshot wounds, according to officials with the department. Another person was injured by debris from the shooting but was not shot.

Detectives learned that a man entered the business and began firing a handgun, police said.

The shooter left the area in a vehicle but was followed by a witness to the area of 44th Street and Campbell Avenue, Phoenix police officials said. The suspected shooter then ran a red light, hit two other cars and the suspected shooter's car rolled over. The suspected shooter was then detained by officers. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The drivers of the other two vehicles involved in the crash were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officials do not believe any other suspects were involved. The suspected shooter is still in the hospital as of Nov. 18 and police said once he is released, he will be booked on several felony charges. The identity of the suspected shooter was not released and will not be until his officially booked, police said.

As for the motive for the shooting, police said that is not yet known, but they do believe one person at the business was targeted by the shooter.

Video of the shooting sent to 12News shows a man walking away from businesses, then turning around and firing multiple shots into the business. Several people were seen running from the scene.
