Mom, boyfriend arrested in Glendale toddler's death

Francisco Javier Felix Higuera and Maria Isabel Machado Perez were arrested on Friday.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Two people have been arrested in connection with the death of a 21-month-old boy in Glendale, according to newly released court documents.

Francisco Javier Felix Higuera and Maria Isabel Machado Perez were arrested on Friday. Perez is the child's mother and Higuera is her boyfriend, according to the documents.

Perez had left the little boy with Higuera while she went to work and came home to find the child injured and unresponsive.

She and Higuera went to a CVS near 75th Avenue and Bethany Home Road in Glendale to seek help for the child.

Responding police officers reportedly notice large amounts of bruising on the child while first responders rushed the boy to Banner Thunderbird Hospital.

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital on Feb. 8.

Those court documents detailed extensive injuries on the boy, including multiple bruises all over his body in various stages of healing and several bone fractures. 

"The injuries appeared to be consistent with being caused by abuse over a long period of time," the document said.

Perez is facing a first-degree murder charge while her boyfriend, Higuera is facing a first-degree murder charge as well as charges related to child abuse.
