Suspect in Mesa shooting detained in Tempe, officials say

TEMPE, Ariz. — A portion of McClintock Drive in Tempe was closed for an extended period of time Monday after police tracked a shooting suspect there from Mesa.

Mesa officers were called to a neighborhood near Gilbert Road and US 60 for reports of a shooting on Monday. The caller said they heard gunshots and saw a black SUV driving away. The caller said there was a man on the ground near the home, officials said.

Officers found a man with at least one gunshot wound who was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, officials said. 

With a detailed description from the caller, the Real Time Crime Center was able to find the black SUV allegedly involved in the shooting entering US 60 going westbound, officials said. 

Officers were able to stop the vehicle in Tempe and detained the driver, officials said. 

McClintock Drive has since reopened.
