MESA, Ariz. — A Mesa couple was arrested Wednesday after their 2-year-old child nearly overdosed on fentanyl, arrest documents from the Mesa Police Department show.

Police responded to the residence near Gilbert Road and University Drive just after 5 p.m. for reports of a child not breathing.

Police said officers noticed chemicals in the home and believed it was freshly burned fentanyl.

The child was taken to the hospital where tests came back presumptive positive for fentanyl and methamphetamine, arrest documents say.

The child's parents, 38-year-old Kyle Johnson and 37-year-old Mikel Juarez, were arrested. They told police drugs were being used in the home and fentanyl pills were in the kitchen next to the child's crackers.

Police said the defendants knowingly delayed calling police and getting medical attention for the child.

Johnson and Juarez are facing child abuse charges.

It's unclear the condition of the child.
