PHOENIX — A driver who ran over and killed a man at a Phoenix gas station early Saturday morning was in self-defense, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found a man, now identified as 35-year-old Kyle Dorman, who was seriously injured after being run over by a pickup truck that had left the scene.

Witnesses told officers that "there was an exchange of gunfire from multiple people" before Dorman was run over.

Dorman was taken to a nearby hospital and later died from his injuries.

Officers were able to find the pickup truck after it was found by a helicopter, which led officers to pull the truck over and take the people inside into custody.

Phoenix police said their initial investigation shows that the people who were in the pickup truck walked out of the convenience store at the gas station and got into an argument with another group in the parking lot.

That argument then turned physical and led to someone pulling out a gun and shooting at the group that was found in the pickup.

That group of people then got into the pickup and started to drive away. The driver ran Dorman over after he pulled out a gun and pointed it at the truck.

More shots were fired at the truck after it drove away, but no one was hit.

The driver of the pickup truck has been released from custody as police say "his self-defense claim is consistent with the evidence collected by investigators."

Charges could still be filed after an investigation is complete.

No one involved in this incident other than Dorman has been identified.

This is a developing story; additional details will be added as they become available.
