MESA, Ariz. - A man is in custody after his pregnant wife was found dead in a Mesa condominium Friday.
Around 4:30 p.m., a crying child called 911, saying her mother and father were fighting and she needed assistance. Police said the child was the 10-year-old daughter of the victim.
When officers arrived at the home near Brown Road and Center Street, they called the girl out of the residence. The child told police her mother was injured inside.
Police said they found 28-year-old Viridiana Gonzalez-Saavedra dead on the floor when they entered the home. Investigators said it appeared the victim had been stabbed an unknown number of times.
While checking the residence, officers said they found two more children, ages 1 and 2, in a separate room. All three of the children were unharmed, and the Department of Child Services was contacted to place them in safe custody.
While officers were still on scene, they received a call from the Phoenix Police Department. They said a man had called to turn himself in.
The victim's husband, Gustavo Alejandro Ruiz Lamar, 35, was taken into custody. Mesa police said he declined to answer any questions.
Detectives learned late in the investigation that Gonzalez-Saavedra was three months pregnant.
Because of the unborn child, Lamar was booked for two counts of second-degree homicide.
