Man accused of 'brutal' murder at Mountain View Park connected to second homicide, Phoenix police say

Investigators believe that Leonardo Santiago shot and killed a man back in March, the Phoenix police department announced.

PHOENIX — One of the four men arrested in connection with the violent killing of 30-year-old Bernardo Pantaleon may have been involved in a second, separate homicide case earlier in the year.

Investigators have linked 21-year-old Leonardo Santiago to a homicide that happened near 23rd and Dunlap avenues on March 20, 2023. There, police found Osvaldo Hernandez Castillo, 20, in a car with a gunshot wound. Despite first responders' efforts, Castillo died on the scene.

The case remained open until detectives uncovered new information during the investigation into Pantaleon's death. They found "digital evidence" that linked Santiago to the second homicide. When questioned about the March shooting, Santiago allegedly admitted his involvement.

Santiago is now facing a second potential first-degree murder charge, and the investigation remains open as detectives continue to build a case.
