Lake Havasu City officers shoot and kill suspect while following up on missing person case

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. — A suspect is dead after the individual "opened fire" on Lake Havasu City officers investigating a missing person case.

The Lake Havasu City Police Department said the shooting happened Wednesday at around 11 a.m. in the Craggy Wash area.

Police said the shooting occurred while officers "were conducting a follow-up on a missing person case" in the area.

"During the investigation, they encountered a subject who opened fire on them.  The detectives returned fire, and the subject was pronounced deceased on the scene," police said in a news release.

Police did not release further details about the suspect.

According to police, some of the detectives investigating the missing person case suffered minor injuries during the incident and were taken to the hospital. The detectives were, however, not injured by gunfire.

Police expect to release further details at a later date.
