‘It’s just devastating’: More than 40 self-storage units broken into in Tempe

Tempe Police are investigating after they say more than 40 units at a U-Haul Self-Storage facility were broken into over the weekend.

TEMPE, Ariz — Tempe police say more than 40 units at a self-storage facility were broken into over the weekend. Now, people who stored their stuff at the U-Haul Self-Storage Facility at Tempe Town Lake on Scottsdale Road are sorting through their items to see what was taken.

Brittany Williams and her fiancé said their unit was broken into.

“They opened up the door to our unit and our jaws just dropped,” Williams said. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh’ almost everything in our unit was gone.”

The lock on their unit was broken, and their items were in disarray inside.

“These guys didn’t just steal boxes, they rummaged through them,” Williams said. “I had childhood memorabilia in there. I had dolls that I wanted to give to my daughter someday… My fiancé’s dad was a war veteran and his veteran medallions are gone.”

U-Haul told 12 News they have turned over surveillance video to Tempe police. Right now, police say they don’t have any suspects.

“It was about $25,000 worth of stuff,” Williams said. “I’m sure that’s not everything.”

U-Haul said in part in a statement to 12 News:

“We sincerely empathize with any customer who is victimized by theft. We are assisting customers now to ensure their storage units are examined and any necessary insurance claims are handled in an expedited fashion.”

Williams said she didn’t’ have U-Haul’s Insurance and is in contact with them for the next steps.

“We want to find who did this,” Williams said. “At the end of the day, I just want them to do what’s right.”

She said she's worried she’ll never see the items she stored at the facility again.

“It’s just devastating, you know? Everything that we lost from our childhood, from our family’s history and stuff like that, like that’s irreplaceable,” Williams said.

Anyone with information, or who had items stolen is asked to contact Tempe police at 480-350-8311.
