PHOENIX — One person is dead following a shooting in west Phoenix, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
Police said the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon near 72nd Avenue and McDowell Road in the parking lot of an apartment complex.
Authorities said when officers arrived on the scene they found a male on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound. The individual, identified as 21-year-old Almonzo Yesslith, was pronounced dead at the scene by the fire department, police said.
Witnesses told officers a vehicle had left the scene before the fire department arrived. They were able to provide a description of the vehicle to investigators.
Two men who drove away from the scene following the shooting were detained near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street, according to police.
"Officers found evidence that suggested the victim was inside the car," police said.
The men were interviewed by detectives. They claimed the shooting was self-defense.
The two men have since been released while detectives process the evidence in the case.
