AVONDALE, Ariz. — A man was shot and killed following an incident with Goodyear police in Avondale, police said.
Goodyear police officers responded to the area of McDowell Road regarding a subject disturbing call for service. The call referenced an individual panhandling on property, police said.
When officers contacted the subject, later identified as 23-year-old Tinse Peterson, he lifted his shirt to display a handgun in his waistband, police said. Peterson then walked away from officers.
Peterson was contacted by police again near Dysart Road, where he became “agitated and defensive,” police said. Peterson began to reach toward his back, at which point officers told him not to, as they knew he had a firearm.
According to police, less lethal weapons were deployed in an attempt to stop Peterson from reaching, however he still pulled the gun from his waistband, and officers exchanged gunfire with Peterson.
Peterson was hit and was given medical attention at the scene, but police said he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No officers were injured, police said.
Police did not release the identities of the officers involved or any other details of what led up to the shooting.
The Glendale Police Department has assumed the investigation into the Goodyear Police Department officer involved shooting.

Two Goodyear police officers shot a man who they said brandished a gun at a member of the community and then at police, according to officials with the Goodyear Police Department.
The shooting happened at McDowell and Dysart roads just before 6 p.m. Wednesday near a convenience store.
Officer Duane King with the Goodyear Police Department said officers received a call about a man pulling a gun on another person at a fast food establishment about a mile away from the scene of the shooting. Officers initially couldn't locate the suspect but found him at McDowell and Dysart roads. King said the suspect again pulled the gun in front of officers and officers shot the suspect.
The suspect was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, King said. No officers were injured.
King said the initial victim and suspect did not know each other.
The area is right on the border of Avondale and Goodyear. Avondale police are assisting Goodyear police at the scene, officials said.
