Former Valley teacher sentenced to prison after accused of 'grooming' students

A former teacher in the Tolleson Union High School District was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to attempted sexual conduct with a minor.

PHOENIX — A former teacher of the Tolleson Union High School District has been sentenced to 2.5 years in prison after he was accused of displaying "grooming behavior" around female students.

Daniel Goman, 39, was sentenced Friday in court after the former University High School teacher pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted sexual conduct with a minor, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office said.

Court records show Goman resigned from his teaching position in 2015 after administrators found inappropriate text messages he had allegedly sent to a student. But Goman was not criminally charged until 2021, after two former students came forward with troubling allegations against the teacher.

Witnesses reported observing Goman allegedly giving out his cell phone number to students and giving extra attention to certain female students, according to a police report.

One former student claimed Goman assaulted them in 2016 after he started sending them messages through Instagram.

After completing his prison sentence, Goman will be placed on lifetime probation and must register as a sex offender.
