Ex-Mesa officer Brailsford found not guilty of second-degree murder

Brailsford was accused of second-degree murder after shooting and killing Daniel Shaver at a Mesa hotel in 2016.

A jury has found former Mesa police officer Philip Brailsford not guilty of second-degree murder.

Brailsford was accused of second-degree murder after shooting and killing Daniel Shaver at a Mesa hotel in 2016.

Officers had been called to the scene after reports of a man pointing a rifle out a window. According to witnesses, Shaver had a pellet gun he used for his extermination business.

Prosecutors accused Brailsford of being too fast to pull the trigger, and alleged that Brailsford may not have even been looking at Shaver when he pulled the trigger.

Below is police body camera footage of the shooting. 12 News has decided not to show the moments when Shaver was shot and killed.

Brailsford's body camera showed Shaver on all fours, crawling toward officers and sobbing. He reached toward his waistband and Brailsford fired.

An internal investigation found Shaver may have been trying to pull up his pants.

Five other officers were in the hallway, but Brailsford was the only one who fired.
