DPS trooper hospitalized in suspected DUI crash in Tempe

A DPS officer as been taken to the hospital after their vehicle was hit by a driver who ran a red light, police say.

TEMPE, Ariz. — An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was hospitalized after the patrol vehicle they were driving in was struck by another vehicle, according to the Tempe Police Department.

Police said the DPS trooper was traveling westbound on Broadway Road near College Avenue at the time of the crash. Authorities said the crash happened when the driver who hit the DPS trooper's marked vehicle ran a red traffic light.

“DUI is suspected to be a factor on the part of the driver who ran the red light,” Hector Encinas, a public information officer for Tempe police said.

The DPS trooper was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The other driver involved in the crash was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Calls to Silent Witness are answered 24/7 by a live person and submitted tips are accepted at all times. Submitted tips are then sent to the detective(s) in charge of the specific case.

Individuals who submit tips that lead to an arrest or indictment in the case can get a reward of up to $1,000.
